July 1, 2003
Richard Yeargan, President called the meeting of the Motherlode
Rockcrawlers to order at 7:35 p.m.
PRESIDENT’S REPORT – Richard Yeargan
Activities for the month of June 2003 were:
Fishing Derby at Bear River
While at the derby, Richard discovered the gate on the club’s adopt
-a-trail open. The gate had been left open for the winter for the
snowmobiles.
Jeeps were going in even though they had been asked not to. Gate locked
Sunday morning and Richard verified that the gate had been locked. It
seems doubtful that the trail will be accessible on July 8 because of
snow.
Installed new equipment on the new “scout.”
Worked on garage.
VICE-PRESIDENT’S REPORT – Jerry Thompson
Jeep is still broke. Charlie is still working in Redding.
TREASURER’S REPORT – Mark Stoller
Paid Richard $46. Balance in account is $926.72
SECRETARY’S REPORT - Mike Stoller
Absent.
MEMBERSHIP – Ron Delaney
One person from Placerville contacted the club and was to be at
tonight’s meeting. Was on a past run and liked what we did; however, he
is a no show. Richard had someone by the name of Jerry come into his
business that was new to the area. Fred Michaels who has been on a
couple runs is interested in the club; however, not at tonight’s
meeting. Scott will check to see what happened to Fred.
CORRESPONDENCE – Del Albright
In Del’s Absence, Ron Delaney passed around the Stanislaus National
Forrest’s Newsletter.
Received notification that Deer Creek Trail is permanently closed.
The 37th Annual Sierra Trek is soliciting raffle gifts, due by July 31.
June and July issues of Blue Ribbon Coalition and In Gear magazines are
available for those interested.
The information packets for Cal-4 members were distributed to Cal 4
members in attendance. There are five Cal 4 members in the club.
Richard received an unsolicited e-mail about Fun Trek II, a guide to
southern California trails. Web-site is www…
OLD BUSINESS
ADOPT-A-TRAIL
One Kiosk is completed and ready to be installed with one more to build
for the Adopt-A-Trail. Scott, Gigi, Richard, Pete, Christian and Dave
built and painted the kiosk. The Forest Service moves very slow;
however, need to keep the Forest Ranger involved. Asked if the club
wanted to work on the second kiosk on July 5. It was determined that the
date is too soon to get media involvement. Perhaps the following
week-end, July 12, would be better. It would take half a day to install
the kiosk because three holes need to be dug. Arrangements would need to
be made for equipment and obtain cement. A truck would also be needed to
transport the kiosk. The posts are 8 feet long x 5 feet wide. It was
determined that Ron’s trailer could transport the kiosk and Richard
would make the arrangements with the forest service.
PAST RUNS
Pete, Buddy, Trina and a friend ran trails in the Salt Springs area.
They found trails in the West Pont area that were closed. They didn’t
travel past the Blue Mountains because the roads were washed out.
On June 12, Ron joined Del Albright and assisted El Dorado County in
marking the Rubicon Trail for GPS mapping. They met at 8:00 a.m. and
were out by 4:30 p.m. The trail was marked every three feet and orange
marks were left where trail markers could be installed on trees at a
later date. The purpose of GPSing is to enforce staying on the
designated trail and for historical value.
The Rubicon is in the worst condition that Ron has ever seen. It took
eight attempts for Ron to conquer the first rock at gatekeeper. The
rocks are missing three to four feet of dirt. plus it is still wet. The
edge of the swamp area was difficult and Ellis Creek was hard and ugly.
Walker Hill was easier than Ron had seen for a while. The group made it
to Little Sluice in time for lunch. Authorities are patrolling Thursday
through Saturday and plan on patrolling Wednesday through Sunday during
the summer months. Grant money from …is paying for supervision by
authorities. A Jeep Cherokee is being built for law enforcement to
patrol the Rubicon.
Ron stated that he received an e-mail from Trina while she was in
Oklahoma stating that the club’s roster listed her cell number
incorrectly. Trina sent three options for the August 23 run that will be
discussed during future runs.
Ken stated that he ran Slick Rock with his other club, the Joaquin
Jeepers.

GUEST SPEAKERS/PRESENTERS
Roger an Allen, Rotary members and organizers for the Plymouth County
Fair’s Destruction Derby presented the logistics for the Destruction
Derby. Both Roger and Allen thanked the Rockcrawlers for our involvement
for the past two years in making the Derby a success. The Derby is the
#1 event for the county and the biggest fund raiser for Rotary. Roger
stated that he would get fair passes for those participating in the
Derby; however, the passes would only be for those participating in
assisting with the Derby, not for all participants’ family members.
There being no further business, the Motherlode Rockcrawlers meeting was
adjourned at 8:55 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Jerry Thompson
