Membership: Mark had no contacts a letter was received from David &
Laura Blake 4327 Alazan Rd Placerville thanking us for the Virginia City
run and expressing their desire to join our group under sponsorship of
Larry & Carol, they would be unable to attend meetings as they are both
firefighters. They are both also EMTs and feel that their skills would
be of value to the club.
Ron made contact with Mark Morton a firefighter in Jackson.
Pete talked to a Cherokee owner at subway and he may attend our August
meeting.
Del talked to a couple of guys that were curious about membership, but
were intimidated that our name suggests that we are hardcore wheelers.
Del suggests that we should make the effort to attract more SUV owners
to the club.
Land Use/ Conservation: The airport flat / Rubicon work weekend was a
huge success FOTR logged 300 hours from 65 volunteers and some people
that stopped by and just started working. The USFS sought out our
campsite to personally thank our group and compliment our work.
FOTR was granted the award for Project of the Year from Cal 4-wheel for
their work on the Rubicon.
Eldorado County has formed the Rubicon Oversight Committee to manage the
Rubicon. Del has been appointed the facilitator/vice chair. He hopes to
develop some long-term strategies and receive some grant monies to
preserve and protect the Rubicon Trail.
Del met some members of the Sierra Stompers sierrastompers.org from the
Pinenuts Sweetwater area who are immersed in a battle to save Pinenuts/
Pine Grove Flats area of Nevada. The BLM is talking about closing the
area. The club doesn’t know how to get involved to save their trail and
they are not politically active. Del gave them his card and offered to
help them correspondence.
Notice of July Cal 4-wheel meeting in Santa Rosa. Received United Voice
BRC letter asking for donations to fund the campaign for backcountry
designation. Richard started a collection among members and got $110.00
to send to BRC in the name of the Motherloderockcrawlers. The Back
Country Campaign in the BRC effort to counter wilderness designation.
Received notice that BRC membership is due September 30.
Old Business: Medical cards almost finished. T-shirts are available, see
Richard. Hitch covers are available, see Ron. Hats are in, see Ron.
By-law change, not enough members present.
Ron suggests that nonparticipating members need to be contacted and
asked if they intend to participate in club activities.
Del reports that Bob Sutton was just diagnosed with prostate cancer and
will be out of commission for a while.
Lee Weatherbys proposal was rejected because he was requesting to become
a member.
New Business: Club fliers made up by Mike were presented to the
membership for inspection and met with approval from the membership
present. Great job Mike thank you.
The Pett Toilet subject was revisited. The club agrees that we need to
have some kind of sanitation facilities. The remaining question is how
to finance the purchase. Del offered $100.00 toward the purchase if the
club will agree to purchase a unit.
Past Runs: Adopt-A-Trail was snowed over we the found lower gate open
even though ranger Judy told us it was closed. We met ranger Mike at the
gate and he told us it would be ok to go in on Sunday. We went Sunday
and found three range rovers that went off the trail and were about to
head out into the woods in the wrong direction from the trail. After
some counseling they were convinced to turn back. On our return trip we
met a guy in a nice Bronco during our lunch break that also showed up on
the airport flat run.
Airport flat, Saturday’s workday was successful and we finished early
enough to run out to Little Sluice where we had to make repairs to
Rich’s Suzuki. Had a great turn out at the Saturday campfire where Del
entertained us with some music and debuted a new song “I would Rather Be
Driving a scout”
Sundays run to McKinstry Peak offered some great views and after lunch
at McKinstry Lake we prepared to make the trip home.
Round Valley / Slickrock: Mikes new Adopt-a-Trail was clean and scenic
and the fireworks were exciting.
Future Runs:
Boxer Protest
Dillon Beach
Deer Valley with Jack Welch
Adopt-a-Trail
Destruction Derby
