Snow Run January 27 |
|
| |
Well, it’s a good thing you all chickened out on the snow run. It
was Deep and it snowed on us pretty good
too. Myself, Eric, James Bryant (prospect) and Eric’s friend Scott
(stock 99 4runner), headed out towards
Grizzly at 8am. Along with a couple of trailered Bronco’s (friends of
mine). We encountered snow at Grizzly
Flats. They don’t plow past the town but there had been some others up
there and the first snow was rutted
and slushy. Not much fun there but as we got further out Capps Crossing,
the snow got deeper and there
was less old tracks. Before we even hit North/South road, there was only
virgin snow. The two Bronco’s
with their big honkin V8’s and huge tires, broke trail and we all did
great till we got to North/South Road.
We started north but only got a little ways down the road before
encountering some really deep drifts. We
hit a point where nobody could get any further without getting stuck to
the bumpers and having to be yanked
or winched back out…
So we gave up, packed down an area big enough to get everyone turned
around and headed back up. Back
at the intersection, we decide to try going south on North/South Rd and
see if that was any better. Well, it
was just as deep and it was very sketchy in places but we made it
further in that direction. The Bronco’s
again leading the way. Eric stayed at the rear to keep an eye on the
stock 4runner and I was just in front
of him, so we could pull him either way if he got stuck… But, I gotta
say, that runner worked great. Even though
he was driving in snow nearly up to the windows in places, it never got
stuck… We continued plowing down
North/South till we hit that uphill section and that was as far as
anyone could get. I packed down a turn around
area for Scott and myself and we waited for the rest of the gang to give
up. (I knew they would have to). During
this time, it was snowing like mad and the wind had picked up so it was
blowing snow nearly horizontal at times.
So we all got headed back towards the intersection again. After we got
back there, we hopped out and had
some fun throwing snowballs and visiting. Couple of other tricked out
rigs showed up with 42” tires. They hadn’t
gotten much further than we did on the north end before giving up…
Everyone got stuck and had to be yanked
out, except for myself and Scott in the 4runner. James just buried his
YJ a couple times. And you all know Eric
likes the snow and will keep going till he gets stuck. Well, he did get
stuck a few times too… The snow was a
good 3 feet deep and more than that in places. It packed down fairly
well. After a couple rigs had been over it,
the tracks were easy to follow, even though everyone was dragging diffs
and stuff…
Other than the ones mentioned above, we only saw a couple of stock
looking rigs. They came just to where the
snow started, took one look and turned around. All in all, a great day
of snow wheelin. I think it was about 3pm
when we headed back… My house is at about 2100 feet and we had a good
dusting of snow this morning so I
imagine they got at least a few more inches up where we were. There
should be plenty of snow for the Iron
Mountain trip so everyone, Sign Up, bring your shovels and picnic
baskets and have some fun in the snow…
Here’s a good shot of James, stuck up to the top of his 37’s… You can
see em digging out the Bronco on the left too.
